Another tongue and cheek, rebel-with-a-cause, piece. I altered this Japanese fortune cat to slightly emulate the leader of the Zapatista Movement, Comandante Marcos. The cats face is shrouded in a sculpted balaclava. The paw in the air was a natural segway to a rebellious fist-in-the-air. The signature “C/S!-Con Safos!” is a Mexican-American, Chicano phrase meaning “With guts”, like “no gut’s, no glory”. The piece is dedicated to discouraging Asian hate and violence against our Asian brothers and sisters as scapegoats amidst the Covid-19 pandemic.
